Identification (ID) Card — 

The card that identifies a person as a member of a Horizon BCBSNJ health plan.

In Network — 

The doctors, other health care professionals and facilities that Horizon BCBSNJ has selected and contracted with to care for its members. A provider, or covered services and/or supplies provided by a provider, that has an agreement to furnish covered services and/or supplies under the program.

Independent Utilization — 

An independent organization commissioned by the New Jersey Department of Banking and Insurance to review utilization management and medical necessity appeals that have already gone through the Horizon BCBSNJ internal appeal process. It is often referred to as an IURO.

Infectious Disease — 

A specialty focusing on the diagnosis, cause and treatment of contagious disease.

Inpatient — 

A member who is physically confined as a registered bed patient in a hospital or other eligible Facility, or the services provided to such covered person, depending on the context in which the term is used.

Insured — 

A person who is eligible, enrolled and covered by an insurance contract.

Interactive Voice Response (IVR) System — 

Horizon BCBSNJ members can access information about their plan and health care benefits 24 hours a day, seven days a week and get instant answers to many of their questions through the IVR system.

Internal Medicine — 

A specialty focusing on the diagnosis and nonsurgical treatment of disorders of the internal organs.
